An effective way to judge a community…
…is to observe how it takes care of those who can’t take care of themselves. With that in mind, my observation about our community is that we in Raleigh, Wake County and the Triangle are a caring and dedicated community. The best lens through which I’ve observed this has been through my involvement at the Tammy Lynn Center (TLC).
As a volunteer and as a board member, I get to witness our devoted staff provide world-class care to a slice of the population that MUST have our help. I see the smiles on our employees’ faces as they teach a child to make a choice in the classroom. And I get to see the excitement on the face of that child when she reaches a milestone that the rest of us take for granted. I have the privilege of soliciting financial contributions from friends and family because I know that we are a community that can support TLC’s mission. And I get to be involved in the planning and strategies of how we will stay on the cutting edge of our work while meeting the financial challenges that arise in this ever-changing world.
My wife, Ann, is the one who encouraged me to get involved in TLC and she has joined me in this calling. We have a son, Sloan, who has several developmental disabilities such as cerebral palsy. Years ago, when he was first diagnosed, it was TLC that provided us our early intervention services. With their expertise, we were far better equipped to bring Sloan along and now Sloan is a smiling 10 year old that walks on his own. While we can never pay someone back for helping us along, we do think that we can “pay it forward” so that others can experience the same level of care when someone in their family needs our help.
